Originally built as a Royal Australian Air Force base in 1952, Avalon Airport began commercial operations in 2004. It was designed to serve as a low-cost alternative to Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, and has since become a hub for budget airlines like Jetstar and AirAsia X.
