The airport on Lord Howe Island was originally built by the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, and was used as a refuelling stop for aircraft flying between Australia and the Pacific theatre. After the war, the airport was turned over to civilian control and began serving the local community as well as tourism. In the early days, the runway was made of compacted coral and was only suitable for smaller aircraft, but in 1974 the runway was extended and sealed, allowing larger planes to land. Today, the airport is the main gateway to the island, with regular flights from Sydney and Port Macquarie.
